This week, I was assigned to have school placement in one of the elementary schools in Toronto. Joyce Public School is small and with about ten classes. There are just about 300 students in the school. If I were one of the students there, I would probably love to go to school. Their classrooms are spacious (our two classrooms' size is their one classroom's size), the students can come out and sit on the mat and chat with teachers and classmates. There are twenty or even less than 20 students in each class. They have the same teacher teaching them all subjects (Music and PE are exceptional). They don't have to use textbooks but they do have a curriculum. Teachers can talk about the weather and the news with students and by doing that, the students are learning reading, speaking, listening, writing, phonics, grammar, social studies, Mathematics and etc. They integrated everything together and they are all closely related to students' daily lives. In Music lesson, every student has a chance to play the keyboard and music computer games. They are not just learning theory and singing only. They really learn Music, including playing the keyboard, music theory and singing. Even the students are poor, they still have a chance to play different musical instruments (including the keyboard and the xylophone). They don't have much homework to do. They do have to do classwork but it's easy and handy to do. They just need to do a few homework items every day. Teachers have plenty of time to talk to students and see how they learn. I really hope someday I can teach in such a school in HK. Well, maybe you will say I am daydreaming. I still believe people should have dreams and so that they will work towards their dreams. Dreams are good for us! Maybe I will say I have my target. I will work very hard to achieve what I want to achieve. I know with my limited ability and power and the limitation in my school, I cannot change the class, change the school or even change the Hong Kong education system so much. But at least I will try to change my students' mind and attitudes towards learning. I will show them learning English is fun and English is easy to learn and we can use English all the time. I know it takes time to show my students all these and I'll need to sacrifice a lot in order to motivate them to learn. Still, I will try to use limited time to teach them unlimited things. Anyway, teaching and learning should be fun. Education is not a tool to transmit knowledge only. Education does help people to grow healthily in physical, mental and emotional aspects. If I fail to achieve my target, I still have no regret because I know I have tried to do that!

Dear Miss Chung,
I have two cousins who lived in South Africa.Their learning enviroment just like Toronto, they are no need to learn so much like us.
My cousins, who are 12 and 10, can speak English very fluently, but once they come to Hong Kong,I'm doing the English exercises(papers) much better than they.
Is this because we always do exercises?I don't know.....
Best wishes,
Janice > <
Dear Janice,
Thanks for your comment! The students in Canada don't have to learn as much and as difficult as us. They don't have to learn as a robot. The students here can speak English fluently but they may not write so well. Maybe English is their first language, they speak every day, so they can speak well. But they don't need to write as much as you do. The school here wants students to develop their creativity and imagination so they don't have to do so many drilling exercise. But I do think students in HK are not creative enough, they are just like robots!
Best wishes,
Miss Chung Chung
Sorry for not writing comments for your blog for a long time. Coz I need to prepare for my UNIFORM TEST! Now, it is over. I am VERY interesting to study this school, I think it is so good. I also want HK have this kind of school, because the school in HK is just learning, learning and learning, we didn't have fun in our learning (EXCEPT FOR YOUR LESSON), it is particularly boring to study in HK school, I hope you can achieve your dream, I will be glad that there is a school like Canada's one in HK.
Dear Edmund,
I have waited so long to see your comment. In fact, I really miss you so much!!! I haven't talked to you on MSN and on phone for a long time. Of course, we haven't seen each other for a long time. I believe you did well in your Uniform Tests as you are so intelligent and hard working. I think HK's education system is not easy to be changed at least in the coming 10-20 years. Some teachers and principals just don't want to change and afraid to have changes. I think learning is not from the textbooks, is from our daily life. Learning should be anywhere, not only in the classroom. Learning does not mean that a lot of homework and assessments. I am so glad to hear that you have fun in my lessons. But to be honest, that's not the way I want to teach English. If I can choose, I will throw away all the textbooks and design my own games and activities for you, such as drama, outing, poem appreciating and etc. Anyway, I will try my best to make my students enjoy my lessons. I really want to see you when I come back. Keep in touch and always miss you!!! >.<
Love,

Dear Curtis,
I have missed you and your comments for a long time!!! I understand that you are boarding at school and I think you should have your laptop with you. If you don't mind, I really want to come and see your rugby training. I played rugby a few years ago and I was one of the school team members. You have been studying in Aus? For how many years? Kindergarten? As I know you completed your primary schooling in YCPS, I didn't realise you have studied in Aus before. Tell me more about that next time! In my opinion, I also think homework is important in quality, but not quantity. You may ask why I gave you a lot of homework. It's the school policy, I can do nothing about it. Anyway, I am sure we had a great time in English lessons. Are you sure you want to go to Aus to study? You will miss your family, friends and I will miss you terribly!
Love,
Miss Chung Chung
